Few New Zealand rugby personalities can truly be labelled legends. Sir Fred Allen, though, is one of those rare exceptions. For the first time, Sir Fred discusses in depth some of his remarkable experiences during World War II where he served with both the 27th and 30th New Zealand Battalions in the Pacific, the Middle East and Italy. There is an insight too into the workings of rugby politics and, finally, there's an answer to why Fred Allen didn't carry on and coach the All Blacks in South Africa when everyone but the New Zealand Rugby Football Union knew he should.
