Summary: Fourteen-year-old Laura Perryman is growing up in the Scilly Isles in 1907, where the islanders scratch a living as best they can from the land and sea. Laura longs to go out with the men on the gig which goes to the assistance of any ships in trouble off the coast. But she is not allowed to because she is a girl, despite the fact that she can handle an oar as well as her brother.
