Classic fiction. Retells the traumatic events surrounding the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera through the eyes of two young school girls. Lillian lives with her mother at Te Wairoa, the village where tourists come to see the pink and white terraces, across Lake Rotomahana. But these are worrying times, the old tohunga has been prophesying doom and disaster, as a mysterious waka wairua, or ghost canoe, appears on the lake.
