The 1898 Dog Tax Conflict was an early protest by Māori in Hokianga, Northland who refused to pay a tax for their dogs. This led to an armed standoff in Rawene. No lives were lost but some Māori were taken into custody and jailed.
In the Hokianga in 1898, Ngāpuhi prophet Hōne Tōia helped avert armed conflict with government troops. The protest was over a tax levied by the Hokianga Council on dog owners which challenged those who owned more than one dog, often for hunting purposes.
