From a 12-year-old boy's perspective and experiences, the book presents the stories happened before and during the Cultural Revolution. The novel tells that a precious Dehua porcelain carving (named Fisher Boy) in Ming Dynasty suffers twists and turns for being protected and handed down; the protagonist Tong Dalu and Professor Han's legendary association; and the friendship between Tong and Zhang Family in danger. The book provides a particular perspective for readers to know that time of turbulance.

《渔童》的发生地，是五六十年代的上海。 一个孩子，一个教授，在危难中结成生死之交。一件珍贵的瓷器，德化瓷渔童，大难不死，历经惊险，被孩子保护下来。两个层次不同的家庭，在疯狂错乱的时代，互相关心，保持着人间最真挚的情谊。而在争夺渔童的过程中，造反派胡家，不念旧情，将旧日恩人打成“牛鬼蛇神”，一步一步“如日中天”，最后却以悲惨结局收尾。 “文革”中，人性被扭曲，但人性无法被消灭，知识被封锁，但知识依然在传播，艺术被践踏，但艺术的生命依然在人间蕴藏生长。这部小说的创作宗旨，是希望在丑中寻求美，在黑暗中投奔光明，在表现恶时肯定善，在死亡中思考生存的意义。
